Book Review~~The Miracle of Mercy Land

I had a hard time getting through this book.  It was really hard for me to get into.  If you have been reading my blog for any length of time you know that in order for me to give a good review a book has to grab my attention from the first chapter.  This book did not do that.  BUT I did continue along.  It was not (in my opinion) very well written. It was pretty dry.   I really did not "get" the plot until more than half way through.   Then it seemed to go flat!  I felt as if I was walking down a road waiting to get somewhere never really getting there.

The main characters are somewhat interesting but I still do not feel as if I have a full image of who they really are.  The main characters find a book that allows them to change the past.  One thing this book did for me was make me more aware of the choices people make in life....mostly my own.

This book was provided to me free for review, all the opinions are my own.

Cooking Thursday~~Halloween Fun Food

Halloween Fun Recipes

Although we do not go all out with Halloween, I do like to make a fun meal for us.  So Saturday we are having Wormy Sandwiches, Fiery Potato Chips and Ghostly Custards to end our meal.  I will post about our meal when we actually eat it.

All these recipes and photos I got from Taste of Home.  You have to love them!!

Squirmy Wormy Sandwiches
1 package (16 ounces) hot dogs
1 tablespoon canola oil
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon spicy brown mustard
Dash Liquid Smoke, optional
6 hamburger buns, split

Cut each hot dog into eight strips. In a large skillet, saute hot dogs in oil until golden brown.
Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and Liquid Smoke if desired; heat through. Serve on buns.  6 servings.

Fiery Potato Chips
4 medium unpeeled potatoes
4 teaspoons salt, divided
4 cups ice water
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Oil for deep-fat frying

Slice potatoes into very thin lengthwise strips. Place in a large bowl; add 3 teaspoons salt and ice water. Soak for 30 minutes; drain.  Place potatoes on paper towels and pat dry. In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, garlic salt, parsley, cayenne and remaining salt; set aside.

In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat oil to 375°. Cook potatoes in oil in batches for 2-3 minutes or until deep golden brown, stirring frequently. Remove with a slotted spoon; drain on paper towels. Immediately sprinkle with reserved seasoning mixture. Store in an airtight container. 10 cups.

Ghostly Custard
1 can (15 ounces) solid-pack pumpkin
1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground allspice
2 eggs
2 cups whipped topping
Miniature semisweet chocolate chips

In a bowl, combine the first seven ingredients; beat on low until smooth. Place eight ungreased custard cups in two 8-in. square baking pans. Fill each cup with 1/2 cup of pumpkin mixture. Pour hot water around cups into the pans to a depth of 1 in. Bake at 325° for 40-50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Remove from pans to cool on wire racks. Before serving, top each with dollops of whipped topping in the shape of a ghost; add chocolate chips for eyes. 8 servings.

Jell-O Museum~~Homeschool Field Trip

Our homeschool group had the pleasure of going to the Jell-O museum this past Friday.  In all the years we have lived here we have never been.  So we were all excited to go.

The children playing some games while waiting for our tour.

This was boxes of jell-o from all over the world.  Who knew it was so popular other than here in the US.

This was our tour guide...she was a peach let me tell you.  I loved her!  She was just as fun as the jell-o itself!

Below are some of the boxes from around the world...
I can not remember where this one is from.

From Egypt

This was from China.  The interesting thing was they are in rolls.

Interesting flavor..mango from Pakistan

This was a recreation of a magazine ad.  The museum found all the pieces from the ad and did this display.

Jell-O mold display.  I love all these.  I would like to collect some of these.  They sell some of them in the gift shop.  A really fun one is a jell-o mold of the brain!!  How fun would that be?!

These remind me of my grandmother's house.  Especially the round one in the front.  She doesn't use it for a jello mold, she uses it to make an ice ring for the punch bowl.

Early advertising gimmicks.  Our daughter Hannah loved looking at these.

Christmas ornament.  I'd love one of these as well.

This was the video section where the kids could sit and watch some old Jell-O commercials.  I remember some of them when I was a kid.

Here is the display of the brain made from the mold.  Isn't that fun?!

Most people have these.  I have an American flag mold.

I hope you enjoyed your tour of the museum as much as we did.  If you are ever in the Rochester, NY area you really should stop in here.   Tomorrow we are heading out on another field trip...this time to the recycling center.  This should be fun!

Book Review~~Two Tickets to the Christmas Ball

I have not completely finished this book yet so I can not give my review at this time.  But I will come back and add it when I'm finished.

Product Description:

In a sleepy, snow-covered city, Cora Crowder is busy preparing for the holiday season. Searching for a perfect gift, a fortuitous trip to Warner, Werner, and Wizbotterdad’s (a most unusual bookshop) leads to an unexpected encounter with co-worker Simon Derrick. And the surprise discovery of a ticket for a truly one-of-a-kind Christmas Ball.

Every year, the matchmaking booksellers of the Sage Street bookshop host an enchanting, old-fashioned Christmas Ball for the romantic matches they’ve decided to bring together.

This year, will Simon and Cora discover a perfect chemistry in their opposite personalities and shared faith? Or will the matchmakers’ best laid plans end up ruining everything this holiday?

Download N Go Review~~Terrific Tigers

It's time for another Download N Go review!  This time it's Terrific Tigers.  This was a great unit study...I'll let you in on a little secret....They are ALL great unit studies!

Our week looked something like this:

Day 1: What Is a Tiger?
Day 2: Getting to Know Tigers
Day 3: Where Are the Tigers?
Day 4: The Science of Tigers
Day 5: Cool Things About Tigers

Here is a sneak peak at some of the pages you get in this ebook.

Who knew there were so many different breeds of tigers!  We enjoyed researching all the different breeds.  The pictures within the study are so vibrant and colorful.  Our children enjoyed looking at them and putting the things we learned in their scrapbooks.

To celebrate the end of our week we are going to be making these...

To see other reviews of this study go over to the Download N Go blog.

I have been given the OK to give a way a copy of Terrific Tigers!!  Just leave a comment on this post and tell me what your favorite Download N Go unit study is.  Also, please leave me your email address as well, I will need it to notify you if you've won.  No jumping through hoops!  I'll draw the winner next Friday, October 29.  I do allow anonymous comments just leave your name and email address.

BUT this give a way is open to only those NOT connected with The Old Schoolhouse in any way shape or form!  Sorry!

Cooking Thursday~~Homemade Ketchup

We go through a lot of ketchup here!  I was looking through some old recipes I had written down and came across this one.  I think it's one I found in my husband's family cookbook.  I remember my mom making ketchup before and (sorry mom) it really didn't taste very good.  I made this one and our kids LOVED it, they request this instead of the bottled stuff now.

Homemade Ketchup

6 oz can tomato paste
1/4 - 1/3 cup water (I use 1/3 cup)
2 T apple cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 pinch cloves
1 pinch allspice
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1/4 cup brown sugar

Add all ingredients to a bowl whisk to combine.  Chill overnight.

I'm telling you this is the best recipe for ketchup!!  We had this yesterday on our hamburgers.  Andrew took the picture of his supper.

In the craft basket:
Scrapbooking and some cards

Looking forward to this week:
Field trip to the Jell-O museum.

Tips and Tricks:
When having people over to your house, clean one room per day to prepare the whole week.  That way I don't stress out over getting ready.

My favorite blog post:
I really did not read or do many blog posts last week.  I was busy getting ready for Andrew's Birthday party.

Blog hopping: (a new discovered blog I want to share):

No words needed (favorite photo or picture, yours or others you want to share)

Lesson Learned this past week:
Just because we live in a small house doesn't meant we can't have people over.  The Bible commands us to have hospitality!  Something that I have struggled with.

On my mind:
going back to college!  I'm getting my BA in Religion with a minor in Counseling through Liberty University.  I'm so excited to start....BUT the head ache of obtaining financial aid is really annoying!

Devotionals, Scripture Readings, Key Verses:
Hebrews 13:2
"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels."

Book Review~~Eat this and Live

Written by: Don Colbert, MD with
Joseph A. Cannizzaro, MD

This book is colorful, eye catching and FULL of information regarding a healthy life style.  This has been something we have been working on for a few weeks now.  We have been using this as a health class for our kids.

This book is like a road map on feeding your children healthy nutritious foods from birth through elementary age.  It is also good for those who want to go back and learn healthy eating all over again.  I know this has been good for our family.  In this day and age we are all feeding our families processed foods and drive thru.

We are blessed that for the most part our children will try anything we put in front of them.  We have tried from a very early age to teach them to at least try something...most of the time they liked what they tried.  This book showed me the importance of teaching the children to read food labels.  The shorter the ingredient list the better the food was (most of the time).  We believe in getting our children involved in the food decisions...it helps them develop healthy habits later in life.  This book is a great addition to any family!!

Cooking Thursday~~Fudgies

Last night at our kids club program at church we had a tailgate party.  Each leader was asked to bring cookies.  Around 5pm I remembered I needed cookies!!  Considering I couldn't go to the store to buy cookies I had to find something I could make in an hour.  I remembered cookies my Mom use to make.  Some people know them as no bake cookies.  I call them fudgies.  A few of the children loved the cookies so much they asked me to give their Mom the recipe and I know she reads my blog so this is for you Kathi!!

Fudgies

2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups quick oatmeal
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Put sugar, milk, butter and cocoa in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.  Boil for 1 minute.

Remove from heat and add vanilla and peanut butter mix until peanut butter is melted.  Add oatmeal and stir until well mixed.

Drop by tablespoon onto wax paper and let cool.

These are the easiest cookies I've ever made!!  ENJOY!

Happy Homemaker Monday

Weather in my neck of the woods...
61 degrees and overcast

Things that make me happy...
doing for my family.

Books I'm Reading...
Bible...reading through the Bible in 4 months...I will finish Psalm 17 by days end.
few books for review

Whats on my TV today...
America: The Story of Us, we use this as a history lesson for the kids

On the menu for dinner...
crockpot meatloaf and potatoes.  It turned out really good!!  This was the first time I've had meatloaf turn out.  We eat our supper meal at noon because my husband has to go to work at 2pm.  The kids and I usually have a small meal at supper time.

On my To Do list...
clean the house for Andrew's birthday party.  Tomorrow is his birthday!

New Recipe I tried or want to try soon....

In the craft basket...
working on nothing new this week

Looking forward to this week...
Andrew's birthday party Saturday.

Tips and Tricks...
have nothing for you really

My favorite blog post this week...

Blog hopping (A new discovered blog to share)...

Picture to share...
backyard autumn beauty!!

Lesson learned the past few days...
Hospitality starts in the heart.  People do not really care about how "perfect" you house is....at least they shouldn't.  Invite people over and they will come over.  Take the first step.

On my mind...
I'm headed back to college!!  I'll be starting my BA degree at Liberty University.  It will be all done online!  I'm taking Religion with a minor in counseling.  I'm nervous, excited and at moments think I've gone completely crazy.  But when God places something on your heart you had better step up to the plate and OBEY!

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, key verses...
Do we want God to get our attention like Saul on the road to Damascus?  Read Acts 9 to refresh your memory.  We are in the middle of our missionary conference.  One of the speakers yesterday said this...
"It is always safer to give God your attention than to put God into a position to get your attention."

I don't know about you...but I defiantly do not like having God get my attention.  It is usually done with a bang!!  Have you given God your attention today?

TOS Review~~The Digital Field Trip

As a member of the TOS Crew we were given this DVD to watch and give our honest review of this product.

We went on quite an adventure...We went to the wetlands, rainforest and the desert!!  Without even leaving our home.  This was the best of both worlds!!

Our children had so much fun playing around with all the features!  Even tho the review is over, our children will be using this for many weeks to come.  There is so much to each field trip we could not possibly cover it all.  But the children look forward to using this again and again!!

I really liked that right on the CD was Teacher's resources.  I didn't have to go searching for extra things to go over with the kids.

This DVD is 3 field trips rolled into one package.  The children really enjoyed building their own desert!  How neat, they really learned a lot from this.  We look forward to using this again and again.  I think I've made my point on this...LOL!

The only negative thing I could find was the price.  This Digital Field Trip series is $125.00.  You can purchase this HERE.

Download N Go Review~~Rocking Robots

The next study up on our review schedule was Rocking Robots!  The first thing I heard from our son was FINALLY a unit study I can really get into!!

Our daughter's also really enjoyed this study.  One of their favorite movies is The Iron Giant...so of course they were excited because they knew we would be able to watch this movie at the end of the week.

We learned about everything from the first robot to robots that work in space and in the ocean.  There were amazing video clips as well as books to read.  What more could we ask for?

Here's a sneak peak of what you will get with this amazing unit study.

Rocking Robots can be purchased for $7.95 at the Download N Go site. Go on over and see what other review team members have written on the Download N Go blog.

This unit study was given to me in exchange for my honest review.

Cooking Thursday~~Stuffed Pepper Soup

I am a lazy type of a cook.  I do not like to fuss over things especially when we are crunched on time.  We love stuffed peppers but I do not like all the work associated with them...at least I think its a lot of work.  So one day...I got mad...I know there's a big shock!! LOL!  I threw everything in the pot and it was GOOD!

Stuffed Pepper Soup

1 pound ground beef
1 clove of garlic minced
1 bag frozen peppers and onions (I use to use 4 bell peppers and 2 onions)
3 beef bouillon cubes
2 jars spaghetti sauce
1 cup long grain rice (more or less if you want it a thick stew or thin soup)
1/8 cup brown sugar

Cook the ground beef until no longer pink.  Add garlic, peppers, onions and bouillon cubes cook until peppers and onions are soft.

Add spaghetti sauce bring to a boil then add rice and brown sugar cook until rice is done.

Many times I add more rice because we like it more of a stew consistency.  Serve with crackers or corn bread.  You can also throw this all in a crock pot and cook.  But cook the beef first.

I really must remember to take more pictures in the kitchen while I'm making these things!  For more recipes go on over to Diary of a SAHM.

TOS Crew Review~~LanSchool

We were given a trial subscription to LanSchool.  Which is a classroom management and monitoring software.  This software allows parents to track and manage what happens on family computers.
Although this software is VERY good.  It is not a fit for our family.  We have 2 computers, that belong to us, the parents.  Our children do not use the computer for school work.  But I must say this, while I was playing around with the software, it was fun "messing" with my daughter while she was on the computer.  She thought she had "broke" it!  *snicker*

You can make the screen go black, turn off the speakers, restrict websites and more.  You can download the LanSchool product brochure HERE.

Lanschool Home v7.5 can be purchased at the LanSchool website
Price:  $99 (License plus 3 yr support)
Product Type:  Software
Other Products:  Classroom Version

To see other reviews go on over to the TOS CREW blog to read more.

As a member of the TOS Crew I was given this software free of charge in exchange for my honest review.  Not other compensation was received.
