TOS Crew Review~~Greek 'n' Stuff

I was familiar with Greek 'n' Stuff before this review but never used any of their products.  We were given one of the "Alone with God" studies to review.  The one we received was the study of Acts (KJV).  The Alone With God Bible studies were written  for the middle to upper elementary age group. However, some families use these workbooks during family devotions for younger students by reading the Scripture passages and questions orally.

The 52 week studies have scripture readings, prayer and daily readings your child will get a complete understanding of the book.  The studies come in 2 different versions NIV (New International Version) and KJV (King James Version).

Each day looks something like this:
  • Prayer
  • Read or recite memory verse
  • Read and answer questions (usually 2-3 questions)

We decided to use this study for our family devotions.  It really gets the children (and us for that matter) thinking about the Bible in depth.

This study was a very complete study of Acts.  Although, we have not completed all of it yet, we are really being challenged to get below the surface of the Bible.  The questions are simple enough that everyone can participate.  There are other questions in the sidebar of almost each page.   There is nothing like sitting down as family to study God's Word.   Teaching our children to really study the Bible, not just read it, is one of our main goals in homeschooling.

The Greek 'n' Stuff website has a bunch of information as well as SAMPLE PAGES for you to see.  You can also request a copy of their CATALOG.

The cost of this study is $23.95.  Other "Alone with God Studies" are:
Jonah and Ruth ~ NIV or KJV ~ $8.95
Esther ~ NIV or KJV ~ $8.95
1 Samuel ~ NIV or KJV ~ $21.95

To see what other TOS crew members had to say about Greek 'n' Stuff go HERE.

**I was given a copy of this study for review purposes only.  No other compensation was received.**

Cooking Thursday~~Black Beans and Rice with Turkey

We love turkey, beans and rice.  So this was a perfect recipe for us!  I make this today for our lunch.  I followed the recipe a little.  But most of my cooking is using the recipe as a springboard.

Black Beans and Rice with Ground Turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • fresh garlic 2 cloves, minced
  • 1 pound of ground turkey
  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups black beans, drained
  • 2 (8-oz) cans tomato sauce
  •  2 cans of water
  • Chili powder to taste (I use 1 Tablespoon)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup of rice
Saute onion until tender in olive oil. Add garlic and ground turkey saute a minute more. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil.  Add rice and cook until rice is tender. Good with fresh tortillas on the side.

TOS Crew Review~~Writing Tales

***I have a lot of cute pictures to add, but we are expecting very strong storms so I will add them later.***

WHAT IS IT?
Writing Tales has 2 Levels to it's curriculum for teaching both composition and language arts in the classical style.  It is recommended for students in the upper elementary grades (approximately 3rd – 5th).

You can go HERE to read about some basic information about Writing Tales.

Writing Tales is very user-friendly, the Teacher’s Guides include day-to-day lesson plans for homeschoolers as well as lesson plans for co-ops. The Student Workbooks take your child through in-depth studies of 15 different fables and fairy tales, and guide them through the process of re-writing each story in their own words. Because it uses the classical approach a very complete study and analysis is done for each story, a lot of practice is included. Of which includes, grammar, copywork, spelling, and vocabulary, making Writing Tales a fully comprehensive writing curriculum.

OUR THOUGHTS:

We received BOTH levels!!  I couldn't believe how blessed we are.  We decided to start right out at the beginning.  Our lessons went something like this:

Day 1 - Read and discuss the story.  The children had to circle the capitals at the beginning of the sentences.
Day 2 - Copywork, the children copied a sentence from the story.  All with correct punctuation.
Day 3 - Vocabulary - usually our children dislike vocabulary, but they really enjoyed this part of the program.
Day 4 - Re-read Grammar Lesson (we did this in day 3 because we only school 4 days a week)
Day 5 - Write a rough draft of the story.  The children were to rewrite the story in their own words.  I love this!!

Writing Tales is an extremely fun curriculum to use.  This has also showed us that we learn better in a classical format!  I highly recommend this curriculum.  This is defiantly going on our list for next year.  This is the first time our children have actually asked US to do their writing.  So if you have a child that is just struggling with writing or plain doesn't want to do it this is for you.

WHERE YOU CAN GET IT:

Level 1
Student Workbook $19.99
Teacher's Guide $24.95

Level 2
Student Workbook $24.95
Teacher's Guide $32.95

Writing Tales' Annual Sale Coming Soon!  Get 20% off plus FREE Shipping from May 2nd to May 9th!!!

As a part of TOS Review Crew I received Level 1 and 2 in exchange for my honest review.  No other compensation was exchanged.

Download N Go Review~~Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a day that most everyone looks forward to.   Your either the Mom looking forward to your special day, or spending time with your Mother.  I have to admit I was a bit "worried" about this study.  I am sure many other reviewers felt the same way....I mean Mom teaching your kids about Mother's Day.

We actually had a really great week with this one.  I have mentioned this many times but our children are older than what the scope is for these studies.  But let me be the first to tell you...our children love these studies.

Our week looked something like this...
Day 1: What Is Mother's Day
Day 2: The History of Mother's Day
Day 3: Celebrating Mother's Day
Day 4: Preparations for Mother's Day
Day 5: Goodies for Mother's Day

One of my favorites was the pictures of me the children had to draw.  I cherish these pictures because I know there will come a day when they believe they are too "old" for this.  Each day there was a Bible Mom of the day.  Our children looked forward to these each day.  We spent most of our time on these.
We still have many of the crafts to finish up but the kids sat a long time making these.  I gave them the basic materials and away they went.  I'm not allowed to "peek" at them.  :-)  This was a very special time I spent with my kids going over this study.  During the second day we talked about Scotland,  I think this year I would like a Scottish Mother's Day dinner of cottage pie, and rhubarb crumble.  YUM!  Hint hint my dear husband!!

Healthy Home~~Weekly Weigh In

From now on I'll be linking up to Healthy Home.  This was known as Fit Mommy Friday, but the hostess of this meme could no longer do this.  This is where I will document our journey as a family to shed the extra pounds.  We are also changing our lifestyle at the same time.  I've often thought about my Great Grandparents....mainly my Great Grandmother who lived until the age of 99!  She never once went into the hospital until the week she died.  I don't even think she went to the doctor.  I thought about what she use to cook for us while visiting.  Yes these were often high fat foods, but always natural ingredients.  We are living in a society of the grab and go!  High salt prepackaged foods.  Have you ever looked at what is in those packages?  No wonder we are not living as long as our ancestors did.  Food now a days is fake!  We are also a very LAZY society!!  I can't remember a time when I ever saw my grand parents sitting around!  Still my grandmother is in her 90's and still runs around.  There is no getting around that...We are getting back to the way of our ancestors.  Growing and preparing our own foods.   Eating healthy isn't just about a lot of fruits and veggies and cutting out the fat.  It's about wholesome food AND getting off the couch.

I want my children to learn how to grow their own foods, prepare the food, and preserve the food.  It's not that hard at all.  No matter what you think.  Even if you live in an apartment, or have little land.  It does not take that much space to grow veggies.  IF you just plain do not want to grow veggies go support the local farmers at the farmers markets.  Buy a large amount of them and freeze them.  You might surprise yourself and really like putting up your own foods.

Now to my weekly weigh in....I have not been to a Weight Watchers meeting in 2 weeks.  In that 2 weeks we had 3 birthdays.  Which means cake and other goodies.  I faced the music this morning and I gained 4.8 pounds!  At first I was very angry with myself, but my son said to me in that little cute way..."You came here to weigh in today mommy, that is the first step!"  I asked him if he had been talking with my friend Jen M??!!  That's exactly what she tells me all the time.   I am going to get back on track and shed this weight!

Go on over and link up with the Healthy Home.

Mix well until all is thoroughly combined.
Place mix in your canister with lid.  I keep ours in a canning jar.

Who will Titus chose, and will it be the right choice?

Publisher: Barbour Books (April 5, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1602606811
ISBN-13: 978-1602606814

MY THOUGHTS:
If you have been reading my blog for any length of time you will know I love Amish fiction.  Having grown up around many Mennonites I love that kind of simple life.  Anyway...This book was just what I expected from Wanda Brunstetter!  AMAZING!  Her books capture my attention from the very first page.  I can sneak away and feel the rocks under my feet, smell of the wood stove burning or the smell of the fresh hay in the barn.  I love that about her books.  The only downfall about this book is now I have to wait until the fall in order to read the next one.  :-(

I can really relate to Suzanne in this story.  She was not very good in the kitchen at all.  She would rather be working in the woodshop.  Although I never liked woodshop, I was such a tomboy in my younger years.  It wasn't until my early 30's when I really developed a love for all things home!

Fit Mommy Friday

The past 2 weeks have not been very good for me!  April-June are very hectic times in our lives.  We are wrapping up our schooling for the year.  The kids have testing they have to do, I have quarterly reports I have to do.  The months are full of birthday parties....yada yada yada.

In between all of that I've had health issues.  So you can say I am really struggling to find me time to workout.  Now that the weather is nicer I've been getting outside more.  But I need more of a workout.  After this week things S.h.o.u.l.d slow down a bit.  To help me fit in more workouts I got myself a bicycle!  I have not rode one of these since my early teen years...like age 13!  I started by just riding it in the lawn...softer landing should I fall off.  LOL!  The saying is right...you never forget how to.    My son is always asking me to go riding with him now.  Unfortunately I can only go about a 1/4 of a mile up our road.  My legs feel like jello after our ride.  But I know it will get easier as time goes by.  Before you know it I'll be riding it to my parents house about 3 miles away.

I did not go weigh in again this week.  I know I'm up at least 4 pounds...it happens this point in the month!  How do you control your eating during these "bad" days?   I will go next week and face the music, but just not today.  I can honestly say I'm struggling!  This IS hard to do.  It seems that food is everywhere.  I just need to retrain my brain to make the good choices.

Gratituesday~~Our Lives Forever Changed

Our family was forever changed on April 12, 2005.  My sister, Sherri, worked at a local hospital as a computer tech person.  She was always crawling around in the most unlikely spaces.  This is where they think she contracted Encephalitis.  For those of you who are not familiar with this it is an infection in the brain, usually caused from a virus.  In this case it was from the herpes virus...the same that causes cold sores.  She was also pregnant at the time.  Weeks went by with no word on what was causing her strange symptoms.  The doctors kept saying it was just a bad case of the flu.  6 years ago today her brain started swelling so fast they had to rush her into surgery.  I remember getting that dreaded call from my Mom.  I was not far from the hospital when she called, but what was only minutes seemed like hours until I reached the hospital.  I reached the hospital and found my Dad sitting on the floor sobbing.  This is the only time I have ever seen my father like this.  I didn't know what to do.   People started arriving in groups showing their support for our family.  My aunts and uncles all drove many many miles to be there with us.  The surgery was about 7 or 8 hours at least.  What we found out later was that when they opened her head up she was brain dead.  They removed the right frontal lobe of her brain and her brain began working again.  Only God could do something like that!!  But at that time I did not have that relationship with God.  I remember being SO angry with God for "doing this to my family!!"  My parents are very strong Christians, they called their Pastor to come up to the hospital.  I was mad that he was there.  I didn't understand God and His ways at time.

This is Sherri in the forefront of the picture with our daughter Hannah.  So you can see she is looking great!  She is living in her own apartment with 24 hour care.  She still struggles with memory issues.  But I am VERY thankful for her still being with us!  Also, she delivered a very healthy baby boy during all of this.  He will be 6 years old in July!

It was through all of this that my husband and I came to know Christ.  We both saw the grace that God had given my parents to endure this tragic event.  We wondered how could 2 people praise God for what had happened.  We wanted that!!  Now I can say that I'm very thankful for having that.  Although it took me over 30 years to see my need for a personal relationship with Christ, I am SO very thankful for the parents God gave me.  Without their walk with Christ I would not be the person I am today.

TOS Crew Review~~Science Weekly

WHAT IS IT?

This is a science lesson that gives you a way to look at science at many different levels.   Within each lesson is science, reading, math and critical thinking all rolled into one.   Each issue is about a different topic.  You can look at them HERE.  With your subscription you will get 15 Science Weekly issues within the school year.  Each issue comes with 6 different levels.  Each of the issues are on a different topic.

The website has an online section with an interactive programs on a different number of topics.  Pyramids, Kites and Living in Space are just a few.  Go HERE to see the rest.

COST:
Science Weekly is $19.95 per student if you are ordering less than 20.  $4.95 per student if you are ordering more than 20.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I liked these a lot.  The one that we got to review was on fractions.  My first thought was "What does this have to do with science?"  We quickly learned fractions are all through out science.  Since we got a number of different age groups we were able to do a bunch of different activities.  We learned about environmentalists, musical scales, painting, meteorologists.  Who knew all these had to do with fractions.  But what a great way for our children so see fractions are everywhere!  It has made them appreciate them a little more....just a little!!

If you are looking for a little different approach to science these are for you.  They are quick and easy.  Everything is right there for you.  Go on over to the TOS Crew Blog and see what my fellow crew mates are saying.

TOS Crew Review~~GoGo Kabongo

WHAT IS IT:
GoGo Kabongo is an online site with Reading Games for kids.  These games not only work on reading skills but a wide variety of skills inluding but not limited to: attention, planning, comprehension, phonics, and many more.  They do this through a series of habitats with fun characters like:

Your host:

The host of laughter lake:

There are more of these colorful characters but you will have to go HERE to see them.  The more you play the more you can earn to decorate your tree house.

There is a Parent Center where you can print copies of the characters, become a fan on Facebook, and control your account.

You can get started for FREE!!  Sign up today and you will get the first 2 habitats for FREE!!  You will get Laughter Lake and Galaxy Gardens.  Then for $4.95 you can get the third habitat.

OUR THOUGHTS:

Hannah and Andrew loved this site.  Of course since Andrew was it's all about skateboarding with him!  He spent a lot of time making his very own skate park.   I can see his attention span getting longer.  He does not like to sit for any period of time.  This has helped that....and the best part was he asked to use it.

Hannah was attracted to all the colors on the screen.  I love using computer programs for her because it helps with her hand eye coordination.

Andrew was right there with her.  He liked this program that much.  But Hannah enjoyed the Critter Sizer and Going Buggy.  Not only do these help with her reading but also the comprehension.

I like the progress reports we receive via email.  The report breaks down all of the skills your child has worked on.  It gives you an individual breakdown of each of the habitats your child has worked in.  We are defiantly going to be continuing with this program!  We can see a big difference in Hannah's concentration just in the time we have been using it.  It's also a great way to give one child something to work on while you are helping another.

We did find that at certain times it took a long time for things to load.  We even had a moment when the game froze completely on us.  Other than that we had no problems with this program at all!!

***I received all three habitats free as a part of the TOS Crew in exchange for my honest review.***

Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather in my neck of the woods...
Rain with Thunder!  We have not had a good rain storm in months!!

Things that make me happy...
Obedience to God.  I've been convicted lately that my walk with God has become complacent.  Just going through the motions.

Book I'm reading...
Bible
Theology for Today
Journey Through the New Testament
The Journey by Wanda Brunstetter (review)

What I'm enjoying on TV...
Not much lately...we have watched the Waltons and Little House mostly.

On the menu for dinner...
It's a soup and sandwich kind of day.  Hubby went to work early for a meeting.

On my To Do list...
Clean
Organize

New Recipe I tried or want to try soon...
Scrapple!  This is something my great grandmother would make all the time.  If you've ever had it you either love it or hate it.  It's that type of recipe.  We use to live around Mennonites and everyone made this.  I love it and had it recently while visiting an Amish bulk food store.

In the craft basket...
Still just a few dust bunnies

Looking forward to this week...
Finishing the garden fence.
Getting answers from the doctor

Tips and Tricks...
Place a bay leaf in your flour...the bugs will stay away!  So far it has worked for me.

My favorite blog post this week...
The Kitchen Garden by The Prudent Homemaker

Blog Hopping (new discovered blog)...
Living off-grid at Maple Valley Farm I would love to live like this....and she is still able to blog.

Favorite photo...
We have started a new thing each Sunday.  Absolutely no TV.  We are working on no computers as well.  But with hubby and I both going to college online it makes a bit tough.  After evening church yesterday we turned off all of the lights and lit candles.  We then read from the Bible.  We started at 8 pm and ended around 10pm!!  It was a great time for our family.

Lesson learned...
There comes a time when you have to let your children spread their wings and fly.  Our oldest got her first paying job.  I'm struggling with this, because I'm not ready for her to be old enough for her to do so.

On my mind...
Living a life that God wants me to live.  I long for the farm life again.  I loved living on the farm.  I don't recall ever complaining about the work that was required.  Although I was only 10 when we left.  I have vivid memories of it.   There is going to come a time in this country when food prices are going to be just TOO high to afford.  Growing your own food or raising your own meat sources are going to be the way to go.

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses...
Jeremiah 29:13
"And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."

Download N Go Review~~Expedition Israel

**Thank you Amanda Bennett and Download N Go for sending us this study free in exchange for my honest review.**

Are you ready for another Download N Go adventure?  This time we are off to Israel!  We have always wanted to visit this country.  What better way to visit than from the comforts of your own home.  With Download N Go you can do just that, as well as many other fun activities.  Our week looked something like this:

Day 1: Where on Earth Is Israel?
Day 2: Some of the Special Places in Israel
Day 3: A Bit of History
Day 4: Cool Things to Know About Israel
Day 5: Fun and Games in Israel

You can also take a peek HERE at what you would get should you purchase this unit study.  For only $7.95 you can visit Israel.  What better time of the year to learn about Israel than the upcoming Resurrection Sunday.

We started off by looking on our map of where on Earth Israel was.  It really is pretty difficult to just pick out.  The kids had to really look hard at our map to see it.  It also puts into perspective exactly where much of the Bible took place.  We watched a video called "Walking the Bible".  It gave us a great perspective on what it looks like now.  Although much of what was shown was from the Old Testament, but anyway a great documentary.  Today we also learned what our Hebrew names were....mine for example was Menucha.  I like it!!

Each day we learned about a different food from Israel.  We also learned that their overall diet was much healthier than ours.  Still today it is.

We also learned about different animals that are in Israel.  From Camels to ICK ICK cobras!  I have to say I let the kids explore the latter on their own.  I'm getting hives just typing the name.  :0)  Especailly since they have been in the news a lot lately because of the escape of one from the Bronx Zoo.

I love Download N Go because of the indepth study in Scripture that is found.  It's not just a verse here and there, but really and honestly making it a part of the study.    This was an amazing week.  Who says education can't be fun?  This week was full of fun family activites.  We just finished our week with a "blackout" and reading of scripture.  How uplifting it was to sit there with the glow of candles (with music from Israel playing in the background) just reading God's word.

TOS Crew Review~~Zeezok Movie Guide

Boy this one was so hard to review.  LOL! Not really this was by far the kids favorite one to review.  We had to watch a movie.  Hey someone has to do it!!

PRODUCT INFORMATION:

Zeezok Publishing sent us one of their movie guides to review.  We could choose from one of their movie guides.  We were able to choose from a bunch of different titles.  For $12.99 you can choose from Ben-Hur, Cromwell, Driving Miss Daisy, 12 Angry Men, Amazing Grace and many more you can view HERE.

The Z-Guides contains topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities just to name a few. These guides cover a wide array of subjects making these the perfect unit study.

OUR THOUGHTS:

First thing we did was watch the movie through one time.  Then we watched it through again but this time the children really had to watch the movie with questions from the guide in hand.  I love that they have to really pay attention to the movie to pick out the answers to the questions.

Each guide has a bunch of activities the children were to do.  We headed off to the library to grab some books about English Abolitionist Movement, William Wilberforce, English Parliament, antislavery movement in England just to name a few.  The children really enjoyed a different type of learning experience.  These are a great addition to any curriculum.

We love these guides!  I like that you can do them in one week or spread them out over a period of time.  We are defiantly going to be getting more of these in the future.

If you are looking for a way to add a little more to your homeschool day these are for you!!  Like I said we are going to get more of these to help finish our year.

As a member of the TOS Review Crew I was given a free copy of the Zguide in exchange for my honest review.
