Book Review~~Pause for Power by Warren W.Wiersbe

Product Details:

List Price: $16.99
Hardcover: 368 pages
Publisher: David C. Cook; 2 edition (November 1, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 078140374X
ISBN-13: 978-0781403740

Warren Wiersbe to me was WAY over my head.  So I often stayed away from his books and teachings.  At the prompting of my husband I reviewed one of his "Be" series books on Judges.  I LOVED it.  When this book came up for review I was thrilled!!

Pause for Power is a 365 day journey through Scripture.  The devotionals are short but full of detail.  I found  myself reading each days devotional and then going on a detailed journey in the Bible.  At the bottom of the entry is "something to ponder".  It gives you a thought provoking question.

I'm looking forward to starting this book from the beginning starting with January 1.  Just because you don't have a theology degree, don't think you can't and won't understand Warren Wiersbe's books.  I have learned so much from his writings that I look forward to more.  If you are looking for a wonderful Christmas present this is perfect!!  The gift that keeps on giving all year long.

**this book was sent to me free of charge in exchange for my honest review.**

TOS Crew Review~~Bright Ideas Press~~Young Scholar's Guide to Composers

During our years of homeschooling I had heard many things about Bright Ideas Press.  But until now had never used any of their products.  We were able to pick one of 6 products.  It was a tough decision.  But our children love music and we decided on A Young Scholar's Guide to Composers.

Here is the description from the website:
"This course provides a close-up look at famous composers, their music, and their times, with special attention to character traits and Christian testimony (or lack thereof). Even the musically challenged will enjoy this course! It’s perfect for grades 4-8 but is easily adaptable for younger and older students. Minimal teacher prep will return maximum enjoyment!"

CD-Rom Book
Price: $29.95
Paperback book (298 pages) $34.95

My thoughts:
We LOVE this study.  It is a complete 32 week study.  We were able to choose either the CD ROM or the book.  We opted for the book.   It has everything from coloring pages to quizzes, with everything in between.  When they said in the description "a close-up look" they really meant it!!  Like any of our unit studies we often get side tracked!  Which is just what we did here.  We only got through 2 of the composers, Handel and Bach.

Towards the back of the book there are "Listening Suggestions".  You type in the link given and watch different videos.  There are questions below the links for you to ask.  It gave my children something specific to listen for.  Our kids love picking out different things from musical pieces.

In the back of the book there is even a book list.  Our library LOVES it when they see me come in with long lists of books I need.  :-)  We will defiantly be continuing on with this study.  We have learned so much from just the ones we have done.  I can't wait to learn more....I mean teach my kids more.

We were THRILLED to see the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra mentioned in this book in their list of extras.  We have had the pleasure of seeing them perform on many occasions.  We really want to go see them again.  Perhaps it can be a field trip when we complete this study.

I highly recommend this curriculum!  Not just because they mentioned the RPO but because of the wonderful study it is!!

Download N Go~~Ben Franklin

In this house history is a favorite!!  If you have been reading my blog for any length of time you know we do a lot around here with history.  This week we were able to go back in time to learn about one of our nation's Founding Fathers.....Ben Franklin.

Did you know that Ben was not a math scholar?!  My children were THRILLED to learn this.  Did you also know that Ben came from a family with 17 children?  These are little tidbits of information never taught about this man.  How about this...Ben was left handed.  Our oldest daughter said, "HEY I'm left handed and I hate math...maybe I'll be a famous inventor someday!"

This past fall we were able to see a printing press, much like the one Ben Franklin worked on.
We even thought he looked a little like a young Ben!

A Ben Franklin fact that is near and dear to my heart is that he started the first Fire Department in 1736!

You can learn all this and more with the Ben Franklin DNG.
As an added bonus, Ben Franklin is also this week’s DNG Special.  You can purchase this fascinating study for just $6.25, until November 22.

You can also see what other bloggers from the DNG review team have to say about Ben!  Give your kids the gift of history for Christmas!

**I was given this study free in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are mine!**

Review Maven~~AboutOne.com

I was given the opportunity to review this website.  We get it free for a year!   From what I've seen so far I really like it.  Here is the description of the website.  My review is toward the bottom.
AboutOne.com Product Description:

AboutOne is an online family information management system;
ONE place, accessible anytime, anywhere, from any device, (you don’t have to be at home, and you don’t have to be on your own computer) where in just seconds busy moms can store, secure, and manage household information, including health records, possession details, education records, contacts, and family memories – both text and pictures. http://www.youtube.com/aboutonevideos#p/u/23/Ep5nYDKBtmk

AboutOne stores the information with bank-level security. Then, the system automatically uses the information you’ve entered to save you time on family administrative chores like completing school forms, college apps, caregiver instructions, and tax returns, creating family newsletters and scrapbooks, and automatically creating and mailing holiday cards (coming Dec 1). The information is also available, at your fingertips, to make informed decisions and respond quickly to an emergency. (Also coming soon is the ability to automatically create hardcover photo memory books from the memories and stories you’ve entered in AboutOne.)

This short video gives a good overview of what one customer loves about our service: http://www.youtube.com/aboutonevideos#p/u/14/dvaD5dC7GLg.

Joanne Lang, AboutOne’s founder and CEO (and mom of 4 boys under the age of 6), is a former software company executive. She’d seen how cloud-based computing allowed businesses to gain new levels of efficiency and wanted to bring these same benefits to moms and families.

In this short video overview, Joanne shows how fast and easy it is to enter information in AboutOne: http://www.youtube.com/user/AboutOneVideos#p/u/0/yGIlb-UGBn8.

These are a few of the features that make AboutOne.com truly unique:
· It is One highly secure place, online, to store household information and family memories – no more worries about losing important paperwork or losing data, pictures and contact information because your computer crashed. Also, no need to worry about backing up your data – AboutOne does that for you.

I wish I had a bit longer to review this before I had to post a review.  BUT from what I was able to play around with I really liked it.  It took a bit to input all the information so I was able to use the different features.  As you input information it is saved so you can make a newsletter.  I thought that was pretty neat.  Although, I'm really cautious about personal stuff I like that I can have all the stuff in one location.  I look forward to using this more in the upcoming year.  It a family manager in one site!  Medical, educational, your home information and so much more.  Like I said I did not have enough time to go through every feature.

Here is the pricing info....
AboutOne currently has 3 pricing plans:
  • Try It Free Plan: Free full access account for 15 days with no credit card required. At the end of your trial period you can choose to upgrade your account to one of the other two plan options.
  • Monthly Plan: This plan gets you a full access account for a monthly fee of $5.
  • Yearly Plan: Save 50% off the monthly plan by signing up for our yearly full access account plan. Only $30/ year!

It snowed....which means Gingerbread!!

We didn't get this much but I forgot to take a picture this morning of the snow.  It wasn't much but enough to say we got some.  The reason everyone in our family is excited about this is because we bake gingerbread on the first snow of the season!!  This is a tradition we started 5 years ago when we started homeschooling.  It is now something everyone looks forward to.  Even my parents who stop by for some warm gingerbread after work.  This is a recipe I got from Laura Ingalls Wilder's cookbook.  I love old recipes!!  If you are not familiar with recipes from the 1800's and early 1900's you might be a bit confused.  As well as the way they are written out.  They are written in paragraph form rather than in recipe forms we know today.

LAURA'S GINGERBREAD

1 cup brown sugar blended with 1/2 cup lard or shortening.

1 cup molasses mixed well with this.

Dissolve 2 teaspoons of baking soda in 1 cup boiling water mix well.  Do not worry about the way it looks in this step.  The first time I made it I thought something went wrong.  When you add the baking soda it will foam up...it's OK.  That's a good thing.

In a separate bowl mix 3 cups of flour and one teaspoon each of the following spices: ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves; and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Sift all into molasses mixture and mix well.

Add lastly 2 well-beaten eggs.
The mixture should be quite thin. Raisins and, or, candied fruit may be added.  Personally I like it just the way it is!

Bake in a moderate oven (I set my oven for 350) for thirty minutes.

I hope you enjoyed your visit!  Let me tell you it is GOOD!!!

Cooking Thursday~~Breakfast Casserole

When it comes to the holidays (or any day for that matter) I'm always looking for a quick breakfast dish.  This one is great because it can be made in so many different ways.  You could use bacon or ham in place of the sausage.

Breakfast Casserole

8 slices of bread, (white or wheat) crumbled
1 pound of sausage, fried and drained
6 eggs
2 cups of milk
1 onion, diced (sometimes I've substituted onion powder)
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard
1 pound of grated Colby cheese
1/2 teaspoon of salt

Put bread in the bottom of a casserole dish. In a separate bowl, beat eggs and
add milk, onion, salt, and mustard. Sprinkle sausage and cheese over the bread.
Slice margarine over the cheese, and pour the egg mixture over all. Bake 45
minutes to one hour at 325 degrees until golden brown.

Crafts 19th Century Style

If you've been reading my blog for sometime, you will know how much I love going to The Genesee Country Village and Museum.  This past Saturday my Mom and I went to their craft day.  OH did we have fun.  I was pleasantly surprised at how many children there were this year.  Perhaps I'll take our children next year...not sure about that.  This is something my Mom and I do together.

The tables were set up into stations where you made a different craft.  There were 6 over all.

First we did the Apple Spice Sweet Bags.  This is the scent of Christmas in a small package.

First we put all the ingredients into a mortar and pestle.  Gently crush the ingredients.

Put half of the mixture onto a piece of fabric.  Gather and tie with a ribbon.  I'd post the recipe but I haven't asked permission of the museum.

Next up was turning tin into an ornament.  I should of worn my finger protectors!! We had to hammer a nail into a pattern on the tin.

Below you can see the pattern before we started.  I enjoyed this, but when you have many people at the table it is difficult to hold your hand steady while hammering.  The nail would move and then ouch!  LOL!

Our wonderful instructor.

Next up was the teacup quilt.  This was SO easy.  I'm not very good at sewing (yet).  But I hope to find someone willing to teach me.  This was made out of 5 squares of fabric.  I'm planning on making some of these to give a way as gifts.

This was our VERY patient instructor.  I also found out she is homeschooled!  Hmmm maybe I can take lessons from her...LOL!

This finished product!!  These were so easy to make.  I can't wait to visit the craft store and pick up some fabric to make more.

Next up were peanuts on a string.  These are SO cute.  I have many different ideas running through my head on what I could put in the paper instead of peanuts....small toys, candy ect.  I even thought of making it into an Advent string.  One for each of the kids with scripture in it and a small surprise.

The finished string.  I just think these are so cute!  One problem that might arise is our cat may think it's a toy...LOL!

You might think Mom and I go to the craft day for the crafts!  But we really go for this WONDERFUL soup...Butternut Apple Soup!  OH my I've never tasted anything as good.

Next were these adorable painted snowmen.  I could of chosen to do a santa also, but I liked the snowmen.  These were just cinnamon sticks that we painted.  So simple.  I'm making some of these to give out as well.  So if your on my Christmas list....just pretend to be surprised! :-)

This is our last craft.  Paper roses~~or tussy-mussy as they were called in the 19th century.  They were made from crepe paper...how neat is that?!  This took some finger strength, but I love how it turned out.

This was our instructor for the flowers.

I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed making the crafts.   The museum even has a blog now go HERE to check it out.

In just 5 weeks hubby and I will be going on a Yuletide tour at the museum!  I can not wait!!  It is something we look forward to ALL year.  We missed the last 2 years and made it a point to register early.  So you can be sure I'll be doing a post or 2 about our tour!!

picture from the museum website

I'm telling you if you ever come to western NY you HAVE to visit the Genesee Country Village and Museum!!  Better yet come here JUST to visit the museum.  Come and see all our area has to offer!

Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather in my neck of the woods...
In the mid 50's.  We have had very cold mornings but it warms up nicely.

Bible
Pause for Power (review)
The 60 minute money workout (review)

 On the menu for dinner...
we went on a field trip today to Pizzeria Uno and made our own pizzas!
Supper tonight is turkey catchall soup~~just chicken broth, veggies and left over turkey.  I also throw in anything else I feel like.

 On my To Do List...

 New Recipe I tried ...

Chocolate Chip Pie

In the craft basket...
homemade napkins
I want to make a Bible cover.  Does anyone have an easy pattern...I'm sewing pattern challenged.  I need to find someone to give me lessons.  My daughter really wants to learn how to sew.  I know the basics, but would love to make some jumpers for us.

Looking forward to this week...
growing closer to Christ!!  I've come to realize that I get complacent in my Christian walk.  That is the main reason for the TV purge!  So much in my life takes up time.  Everyone can find time to spend with God IF you give up on earthly things.

Tips and Tricks...
Many hands make light work!  Involve your children in daily tasks from an early age.  That way it becomes habit.  I sadly did not do this and have had (and still) to work very hard at changing this.

My favorite blog post this week...
I have a blog post I want to post and might after this one.  It's about my visit to the museum to make 19th century crafts.  You'll be very proud of me....I remember to take a lot of pictures!!
Blog Hopping (a new discovered blog you would like to share with the readers)...
I found this blog last week and really can not get enough of it.  She is a Mennonite woman, with a wonderful blog!  Go on over and check out Home Joys.

No words needed (favorite photo or picture, yours or others you want to share)...

Lesson learned the past few days...
garbage in garbage out.  If we fill our minds with nonsense, that is just what we will produce outward.  I want my life to be filled with the glory of Jesus Christ!!

On my mind...
Upcoming holidays

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses...

Book Review~~Crestmont

Book description:
"A dream, after all, needn't be fueled by particulars, only by desire." So notes main character, Gracie Antes, in CRESTMONT, a historical fiction gem set in the 1920s. Determined to take control of her life, sheltered Gracie Antes leaves her unhappy home in 1925 to pursue her dream of a singing career. On her way to the big city, she accepts a job as a housemaid at the bustling Crestmont Inn. Once there, Gracie finds a life-changing encounter with opera singer Rosa Ponselle, family she never imagined could be hers, and a man with a mysterious past. Relive the 1920s with a colorful cast of characters. Discover with Gracie that sometimes we must trade loss for happiness. Set in Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania, the story is interwoven with details about the town, the rich history of The Crestmont Inn, and the family who passed ownership from one generation to the next. Many attempts have been made to explain how the mountaintop lake nestled in this tiny town came to be. Crestmont gives a new twist to an old Native American legend, setting the tone of grace around which the story is built. Let the period of the Roaring Twenties spark your interest with its unique social mores, fashion, jazz, and yes, a little bootlegging thrown in for pizzazz."

My thoughts:
I could not put this book down.  There is a little of everything in this book, history, mystery and even romance.  I love historical novels and this book transported me back to the 1920's.  The author did such a good job of making me feel like I was right there.  I could smell the bread, see the wild life and flowers blowing in the breeze.  I had to force myself to put this book down and go to sleep.  :-)

This book has left me wanting to visit Eagles Mere, PA.  I will certainly be watching for Holly's next book.  Until then go on over to Amazon and check out this book!!

Cooking Thursday~~Chocolate Chip Pie

I'll admit it...I'd rather eat a pie than make one.  Katrina has been asking me to make a pie with her...UGH!  I'm just not a fan of that.  Give me a 3 course meal to make and I'm happy.....but pies are just not my cup of tea.  I think it's because I'm intimidated by the crust part of it.  I know you can buy ready made pie crust but to me that defeats the purpose of making pies.  So today we got out a cookbook and searched for a recipe we both would enjoy making.  I've made Shoofly Pie before and really enjoyed making that.  So we went back to the Amish cookbook I have.  In the cookbook there is a recipe for a pat-a-pan pie crust! WOOHOO I think I finally found a pie crust I can embrace!

Chocolate Chip Pie

1 pie crust (I'm using the Pat-a-Pan pie crust below)
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 large eggs
1/2 cup melted butter
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Pat the dough into the 9 inch pie plate first at the sides then across the bottom.  Flute the edges if desired.

In a large bowl combine the sugar and flour.  Stir in eggs and butter until the batter is well-blended and smooth.  Add chocolate chips and vanilla.  Mix until well mixed.  Pour into pie plate.  Bake for 40-45 minutes.  Cool on wire rack until the pie is firm around 45 minutes.

Pat-a-pan Pie crust

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 tablespoons cold milk

Place dry ingredients into 9 inch pie plate.  Mix well with a fork.  In separate bowl add wet ingredients and mix until creamy.  Pour over dry ingredients and mix with a fork until well incorporated.  Pat up the sides of the pie plate and then onto the bottom.

TOS Crew Review~~The Write Foundation-Level 1

**I received this product free for review, in exchange for my honest opinion.**

I was excited to be chosen for this to review.  Writing is one thing our children do not like to do.  They would rather go to the dentist.  We were asked which level we would want to try.  So we picked level 1.  Here is the description of the program....

Curriculum Package 2: Sentence to Paragraph Lessons 1-15 $65 +  tax and/or shipping
There are other packages to choose from.  Click on the link to view them all.

My thoughts about the product...
It took me a few days to read through the introduction, I think they could simplify it a bit.  Even after that time I really did not think I had a grasp on what I was supposed to do.  But we went forward with it.  I figured we would get the hang of it eventually.  It took some time, tears and threats...no not really!!  The lessons are very well planned out and very complete.

The really nice thing was they suggested we get the Mind Benders from Critical Thinking Press,  we already had a couple of them so we used them.

I can really see progress in my children's writing since starting this.  I will defiantly continue with this.  They have even asked (once) to work on their writing assignments! :-) Baby steps....baby steps.  That is what is so great with this...it has given the children the confidence in their ability to write correctly.

Go on over to the TOS Crew blog and see what other crew members had to say about this.

Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather in my neck of the woods...
Coooold a whopping 28 degrees this morning!  But I looove it!

Things that make me happy...
the smell of autumn things baking in the kitchen....gingerbread, pumpkin bread and applesauce cake.

 Book I'm reading...
Bible...I'm working through the Bible in 4 months!!  I'm currently in Jeremiah.
a few books and curriculum for review.

 What I'm enjoying on TV...
nothing

 On the menu for dinner...
I'm not sure yet.  I really need to do better at planning our meals.

 On my To Do List...
menu plan...LOL!
Laundry
cleaning the house

New Recipe I tried or want to try soon...
have not really found anything this week.

 In the craft basket...
nothing this week
Looking forward to this week...
1800's Crafts at Christmas at the Genesee Country Village and Museum!  My mom and I go to this every year.  I'm SO excited, I love learning about what they would of given or made to decorate their homes back in the 1800's.

Tips and Tricks...
relax and enjoy your family.  Do not be so caught up in how your home looks that you forget to enjoy family time.

My favorite blog post this week...
nothing sorry.

Blog Hopping (a new discovered blog you would like to share with the readers)...

Favorite photo to share...
Friday hubby and I celebrated 5 years of wedded bliss.  This is a picture of us.  We were married at our favorite museum!
Lesson learned the past few days...
Many people within the Christian circles can be VERY judgmental!!  Matt and I know without a doubt that God has called us into full time ministry.  We keep running into walls because of my prior divorce. My husband was never married before me.   A man who commits murder, sexual sins, robbery ect. is (according to people we have talked to recently) better equipped for ministry than we are because of my divorce BEFORE to salvation!??  This is what we say...God has called us so who are THEY to say that God is wrong in calling us?!

On my mind...
College preparation for myself.
The situation I mentioned above!  This really burns me!!

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses...
Psalm 75:7
"But God is the Judge, He puts down one, And exalts another."
