We cannot be more excited for this new adventure! We prayed for this for over 20 years! Moving was SO stressful and just plain chaos. But God....
God was with us through out this whole process. Now that we are he we are SO grateful. We moved in on June 14! Not a day has gone by that I have woke up just thanking the Lord over and over for this property. Often through out the past month my husband and I just cannot believe we live here now. Nothing but open fields on all sides of us. Except for the southern part of our property in a hollow. More about that later.
Sometimes I sit under our big maple tree in these chairs. These were made by my grandfather who passed away this past winter. So many things about this home reminds me of both sets of grandparents. From the love of nature from my maternal grandparents to the love of farming from my paternal grandparents. I cannot wait to get into the dirt again.
This is looking down in the hollow from top of our property. It is owned by someone else but such a peaceful spot to look upon. The edge of our property and all around are covered with black walnut trees. I cannot wait to harvest some this fall.
We have spent the better of this past month just exploring our new home. We still have SO much to unpack, but we figure it will be there when we get to it. Every evening we walk the parameter of our home and property. We have 2 acres! We love looking at everything and taking pictures to identify what it is. I'm also learning how certain plants can be used for our health and well-being.
After removing a lot of vines we found an apple tree. It has a nice amount of apples on it!! We will trim it more after the season is over, and remove more brush around it!
I also have a patch of Black-eyed Susans. These are one of my favorite flowers. But did you know it is also medicinal? The Native Americans used the roots for colds, sores and even snake bites. I'm sure there is so much more it can be used for as well.
Learning about the plants and their uses is becoming a fun activity for my husband and I. I've always loved these flowers. But who knew of their medicinal properties!!?
About 2 years ago my husband and kids got me this planter as a gift. I wanted to grow calendula. I planted it and nothing grew for about 2 years. When we moved here it finally started growing! I'm going to just let it go in hopes I can saved the seeds and plant in my herb garden.
We have a beautiful patch of Goldenrod! This is a plant that gets a bad wrap for causing allergy breakouts. But it is not the fault of the goldenrod. It does not release its pollen into the air. Most likely that is caused from grass, trees and dogwood. Goldenrod has been used in medicine for many years. It has anti-inflammatory, diuretic and antispasmodic properties. It has been used also for inflammation of the mouth throat, bladder and urinary tract, as well as skin wounds, arthritis, eczema and so much more. I'm going to play around with this for the eczema because my daughter and husband suffer from it.
A very nice patch of wheat growing at the edge of the corn fields. We are going to pick it, save some of the berries to grow next year.
We also have teasel growing on the back of the property. A search of this shows that is has been used in the past for treating skin diseases. All we need to do is look and research the plants around us. God has provided almost everything we need in life.
This is our kitchen, the picture is what I took the first time we looked at it. We do not plan on doing a lot to it.
I updated the backsplash and painted the ceiling. The backsplash is actually a wallpaper that looks like bead board. I am currently in the process of removing the wall paper boarder at the top of the cabinets. I'm not sure what I'll do there yet. Guess it all depends on what I discover underneath.
This is our downstairs bathroom just as we moved in. I've been working on updating this as well. Using the same wallpaper on the bottom half of the wall.
This is after the paint and wallpaper. I'm going to paint the cabinet and mirror. I'm also looking for some flooring. Just not sure what I want yet.
The staircase is beautiful!! All original wood work. I'm going to save a small section of the wall paper. I think it is very unique. The rest we are working on removing. What a chore.
Now for the best part!! We got our first flock of chickens. THIS folks is a dream come true! See I grew up on a farm. I've always had this way of life in me. Just wasn't the time for us. This is 20 plus years in the making! We got Sapphire Gems from Tractor Supply. They only had 9 left! Good bunch to start out with.
They are SO much fun to watch. I find myself just sitting next to the brooder with a dumb grin on my face. HA! I think they are approx 3 weeks old when we got them, or near that. They are starting to get their big girl feathers. They chirp all day. Just as happy as can be.
It is so fun to actually get my camera out again and take snapshots of life. We are finding so much joy around our little farm. My husband and I will be renovating the shed out back into the chicken coop.
There will be a run off to the side. We are turning it into fort knox so nothing gets at our girls! Thank you for sticking with me on this update. I hope to have more soon!
