Favorite Period Dramas

My husband and I enjoy watching period shows together.  So I thought I'd share some of our favorites with you.  All of the ones I'm going to share with you are produced in Canada.  I love Canadian TV shows.  The ones we watch are very family friendly and appropriate for all.

We recently found Murdoch Mysteries which is broadcast in Canada.  It takes place in Toronto Canada in the 1890's.  William Murdoch is a detective in Toronto.  He uses forensic techniques to solve the crimes.  We enjoy forensic shows but without all the drama and gore that they have here in America.  The show is based on the books written by Maureen Jennings.  I think the show is very well written.  It is a wonderful wholesome family show.  It's something I would not mind my children watching. This show is available on Netflix.

Next up is The Road to Avonlea.  This is a series based upon Avonlea, where Anne of Green Gables takes place.  The show follows the children of Avonlea through a bunch of adventures.  Sarah Stanley is forced to move in with her mother's family members.  As the series progresses you will see many familiar faces from Anne of Green Gables.  Those that we have seen so far are "Marilla", "Miss Stacey", "Rachel Lind" and many more.

That leads me to another favorite of ours, Anne of Green Gables.  I remember watching this on PBS often.  As I got older it was difficult to catch it on TV.  So we purchased this one.

The final one I want to share with you is Wind at My Back.  We started watching this show on INSP channel a few years ago.  Again this was a show the whole family could watch.  That is something pretty difficult to find these days.

This show is about a woman and her children who had to move in with her mother-in-law after her husband dies.  But not before the mother-in-law tries to take the children from her.  This series shows the ups and downs of life during the depression in Canada.

I hope you will go and check out these shows.  I'm sure you will love them!
