Pearson Homeschool~TOS Review

Pearson Education Inc. has been a main supplier to school districts across the United States.  Now they are publishing curriculum for homeschoolers.  They are created to help homeschooled students love learning in their home.

As a member of the TOS Review Crew we were given an opportunity to review one of Pearson Homeschool's new products.  This curriculum isn't just about memorizing facts.  Your student will take what they have learned and be able to carry it on into their lives.  Best of all they will want to learn more.

As a member of the TOS Crew we were given the choice of a bundle from one of these subjects below:

myWorld Social Studies~$69.99 (Grades 3-6)

enVision Math~$99.99 (Grades K-6)

Reading Street~$124.99 (Grades 1-4)

MyMath Lab~Algebra 1 or Algebra 2~$49.97

The subject we chose was:

Here is what we received in the mail to review:

Student Worktext
myStory Video DVD
Teacher Resource Library DVD

When this box arrived I could not wait to rip into it.  For the most part our kids do not like to do workbooks and worksheets.  Mostly because that mean a whole lot of talking from me.  So of course my son wasn't thrilled when he saw the workbook.

So I started looking around at the Teacher Resource Library.  I'm usually do not like trying to find what I need on the computer or via a CD-ROM.  I like to have a book in hand to look through.  Let me tell you...I really liked having the Teacher Resources on a CD.  When I first popped the CD into my computer an information screen came up and walked me through the whole process.  The table of contents are always on the left hand screen.  It is all so neat and orderly.

All I had to do was click on the chapter we were starting and a new page came up.  Everything was planned out for me.  Best of all I can personalize the lesson to fit my children's learning style.  Loved that!!

Throughout the textbook you will find myStory Video pages.  These go along with the myStory Video DVD.  These were by far the favorite of the curriculum.  Of course it didn't hurt that it was about the Civil War.  Our children loved watching these short videos over and over again.  Ok...we all really enjoyed them.  It opened up a whole new world for us.  We have always wanted to visit many of the places discussed in the videos.

Andrew loved the videos best.  He loves learning about history.  He even enjoyed learning about woman's rights.  The fact that the videos are very informative.  They are not just a bunch of boring facts.  As for working in the workbook.  He actually didn't mind it at all!! Praise the Lord.

As long as he could watch the video and do the workbook he was ok with it.  He also said he liked it because it was not a full page.  Through out the workbook there are small questions for your child to answer.  The chapter we are currently working on is Chapter 11 "Industry and Immigration".   We hope to take a trip to New York City very soon.  So our children have been really interested in the history of it.  We are especially enjoying the Ellis Island video.

Some of my favorite aspects of this curriculum is that it is not so rigid that you feel you have to complete everything in it.   I love all the vocabulary through out the workbook.   They have sparked a lot of interesting conversations.  This curriculum is worth the money.
