1 Thessalonians 5:18
I've posted this verse before, but today is a day I need this verse. I pray that everyone has a wonderful weekend...and those in the US have a Happy Thanksgiving. We should be thanking God everyday not just the 4th Thursday of November.

Gratituesday

I am Thankful for many things in my life. But in the spotlight today is being able to spend time with my children. When God called me to be a keeper at home I didn't go with out a fight. I had graduated college and began working at a very good job in the city making great money. This was all before I came to know Christ on a personal level. I then accepted Christ as my Savior and felt him calling me home. I am blessed beyond belief being a keeper at home.

I am able to spend so much time teaching my children all types of things. This is Andrew making his money jar. He is such a perfectionist and has to have every drop of paint in the right spot. They get an allowance based on what work they do during the week. We painted old jars.

Here is Hannah, she didn't like getting the paint on her so she wore 2 gloves instead of 1. Her jar was just a simple clear paint with glitter. A lot like her very simple. She doesn't need a lot to be happy.

This one is of Katie, she like her brother is very detailed with a lot of color on her jar. Everything has to be just so.

I have learned so much from my children over the past 3 years of homeschooling them. Not only have I learned the academic things I didn't want to learn while in school myself, I learn from them to take life one day at a time. Also, just enjoy every moment we have together. We love our little simple life and wouldn't change it for anything. People are always asking us how we do it living on such a small income. We just tell them it is through the grace of God and our simple life. Have a great Thanksgiving. Do not just give thanks on the 4th Thursday of November, give thanks to God 365 days a year!

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today...

Outside my Window...
It is bitter cold here. We had a bunch of snow this weekend on and off. It is supposed to make it to the 40's today. Yippeee! They are calling for a mid week snow "event". I always chuckle when they call it that. It means they really aren't sure what it will be...snow, rain, freezing rain.

I am thinking...
How much the Lord provides for us. My Husband has a pretty good job, where he works there is always a need for the supplies he makes. There were 3 prayer requests in Church yesterday for Husbands loosing their jobs as of January. My prayers and my heart goes out to them.

I am thankful for...
Our new Church family. We have started getting to know a lot of families. The children have made many friends, many of whom are also homeschooled. They will be getting together with them through out the winter. We do not live too far away from them.

From the Learning Room…
We are going to be finishing up our Thanksgiving Unit. We are also going to be putting our lapbooks together. We have made small books on each subject/book we read.

From the kitchen...
Meatloaf for supper, pumpernickel bread, squash and corn pudding for Thanksgiving.

I am wearing...
Warm clothing!

I am reading...
The notes from Sunday night Bible study on Inductive Method of Bible study. I have really enjoyed this study. In just 2 weeks I have started getting much more from God in my daily time with him.

I am praying...
For safe travels to my Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. Also, for a wonderful time with family.

I am hearing...
The children starting to get their breakfast around. My son watching his science show.

Around the house...
Many projects, I'm trying to finish up my Grandmother's Christmas present so we will be able to take them down with us. I'm working on "thinning" out our stuff so the house will be nice and clean after my surgery. I almost feel as if I'm "nesting". LOL

One of my favorite things...
The laughter of my Children, warm embrace of my Husband.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
Cleaning, schooling, baking, traveling, crafting, scrapbooking, birthday party for my nephew, pizza party for our daughter to attend, Tuesday night service at Church instead of Wednesday.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...
At our ladies' craft day we learned basic decorative painting. I really enjoyed it so I found an mayo jar and painted it up with a winter scene. I then place a string of white lights inside. When it is dark we turn it on and it lights up the snowman and the area around him, which I put glitter on the paint.

I've heard of a ship in a bottle but this is just crazy...

For a fun project last week we made bird feeders out of soda bottles. Each of the children made them and we hung them in the tree and one on the deck. This morning here is what we saw in one of the bottles!!
GREAT!.....Now what do I do?????

Did you see the size of his beak??? Mr. Nuthatch to the rescue!
He managed to show the little chickadee how to get out of the bottle. Unharmed! But boy was it entertaining to see. He even came right back for more food!

Christmas Cards completed!

As I posted on Monday in my daybook, I have been attempting to make our own Christmas cards. Well I have finished!! I'm so excited. I have now caught the card making bug.

All of the items I used on these cards I had here at the house. The only item I bought was the Merry Christmas stamp and that was only $1. I think they turned out pretty neat, especially for my very first attempt at making cards.

This one below is the first one I did this week.

I am so excited to begin making more cards to have for different occasions. Weddings, birthdays, Easter, ect. So on my side bar you will notice a few blogs I have been going to for inspiration regarding card making. They are offering some blog candy (give a ways)...as they put it. Please visit these blogs and check them out. Have a great week!

FPhoto Friday

Every year since my Husband and I met we have gone to a living history museum near us for a Yuletide candle light tour. It was always our gift to each other. It is always so much fun. But this year, we will be unable to go because of my back surgery. So I thought I would take a virtual tour on Fridays.

The tour starts out with you meeting your tour guide. We then walk out into the village..back to the 1800's. The actors really make you feel as if you are living back in those days. Nothing says Christmas like the feeling of being back in the simpler days. Although it was a very difficult life they made everything they had.

This was the first stop on our tour in 2004. They were a family that was pretty well off for back in the 1800's. They had taken in the school teacher for the holidays. There was a quilting theme this year and each home was working on a quilt square. There was a fire in the fireplace, Christmas carols being sung, wonderful Christmas smells, bread baking, and pine.
I will post more next week on the tour. I am so thankful for the life that God has given me. I do not need a lot of stuff like many people we know. We are thankful for what God gives us.

Slow Cooking Thursday

Hamburger Soup

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
2 large potatoes, sliced (I cut them into small/med. cubes)
2 stalks celery, sliced
salt and pepper to taste
2 onions, thinly sliced
1 can peas
3 small carrots, sliced
1 can condensed tomato soup
1 1/4 cups water

Place ground beef in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble, and set aside.

Place the potatoes in a layer to cover the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the celery over the potatoes, and cover with a layer of ground beef. Season each layer with salt and pepper. Throw in the carrots, onions and peas. Mix together the tomato soup and water, and pour over the top. Cover, and set to low for 6 to 8 hours.
The sky is the limit with this soup. I've added other types of veggies as well, corn, summer squash, lima beans. The list could go on and on. Enjoy! To see other slow cooking recipes jump on over to Sandra at Diary of a SAHM and check them out. Join in on the fun...you do not have to submit a slow cooker recipe if you really do not have one.

Word Filled Wednesday

2 Timothy 1:7

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

This verse was printed out and hung above my sister when she was in the ICU at the hospital. My parents read this verse everyday. It became their crutch during the days of not knowing if she would survive. God always has a reason for why things happen in life. It is not for us to ask why...we are just to give the situation over to him. I am thrilled to say that my sister has recovered from her illness, somewhat. Sadly, she will probably never come home, she will be in an assisted living hospital for the remainder of her life. But God knows the reasons.

Gratituesday

I am so thankful God has given us the change of seasons. I love the change every so often. It never ceases to amaze me of how wonderful an artist God is. Instead of complaining about the seasons stop and enjoy the beautiful art work done by our Heavenly Father!

Like it says in Revelation 14:7 "Worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea and the fountains of water."

Spring birds in our tree. Everything waking up from the long winter's nap. Song birds joyfully singing, leaves starting to grow. Fresh smells from outdoors.

Leaves in full bloom in the summer. Children laughing playing in the water. Chasing each other with water. Occasionally getting their Father with a bucket of water or the hose.

Changing leaves, beautiful colors of reds, orange, and yellow. Cool crisp mornings, mild temperatures during the day. Pumpkins, squash, apples, all the items God has provided for us.

This is what I saw this morning! Winter has arrived...a month early. But how beautiful it is. I love the snow plow. I love to see the snow on the branches, crisp cold mornings. Being able to snuggle up on the couch with loved ones.

Simple Woman Daybook

FOR TODAY... November 17, 2008

Outside my window...snow flurries, grey skies, some sun peeking through the clouds.

I am thinking...about our great day yesterday. We met with the deacons and Pastor regarding Church membership. I'm thrilled to say that we were accepted into membership. It was a great day. We had to stand before the congregation and tell our testimony's. I'm not a public speaker but we got through it. My parents also became members as well of the same Church. It is so great to be able to share this area of our lives with Mom and Dad.

I am thankful for...Pastor's new series on Inductive Method of Bible Study. We did the first lesson and I can already see a difference in my personal devotionals. It is such a blessing to really see what God is telling me through His Word.

From the learning rooms...today we did cranberries, and Squanto. Part of our Thanksgiving unit study.

From the kitchen...left over chili from this weekend. Hot dog chili casserole for supper. Perhaps something nice for dessert!

I am wearing...sweatpants and sweatshirt, warm socks and slippers. It is pretty cold today.

I am creating...homemade Christmas cards. I'm almost done with them. I am so excited to have them done. I wanted to do them last year but never got around to it.

I am going...to my woman's Bible study.

I am reading...the Bible, 2 Peter

I am hoping...to have everything in order before my surgery next month.

I am hearing...the children messing around...grrrr!!!!

Around the house...items to seal up the house for the winter.

One of my favorite things...being in Church. Spending time with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

A few plans for the rest of the week...blessing our home, baking, mid-week prayer service, more of our Thanksgiving unit study, then making some of the foods and crafts we learned about this week.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

This is a photo I took of my daughter Hannah. She loves to stop and smell the flowers. She is defiantly a child who loves the simple things in life. She has taught me a lot. This was taken this past spring in our side yard. I took a photography class through our homeschool co op.

Word Filled Wednesday

1 Thessalonians 5:18
"give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

This verse hit me like a ton of bricks the other day. I've read it many times but it hit home to me. Give thanks IN ALL .... wow, all things give thanks. That means we are to thank God for the bad things as well?! It is very easy to thank God for everything that is going well in our lives. Although the bad things do not come directly from God...he may allow them to happen. So remember to thank God for His presence in our lives. But looking back over some of the bad things in my life I can see God's hand at work. They all lead to Him, to bring Him the glory. So the next time something isn't going your way, remember that God is in control. Give it over to him. Easier said than done I know!!
Are you remembering God in ALL circumstances?

Applesauce and a give a way!

Today the children and I decided we needed to finish up the rest of the applesauce. So here are some pictures to go along with it. ALSO, a friend is having a give a way on her blog. Scroll to the bottom to read more about it.
First of all you wash your apples. This is only half of the apples that were given to us. My parents took a bunch.
Then cut up the apples and place them in a large pot with a little water on the bottom. Let them cook until they are tender.
Now if you are blessed enough to have a kitchen helper like this the applesauce making process is so easy.
You load the apples into the hopper. The machine does the rest for you. I did my tomatoes like this also. Then I added the tomatoes to the crockpot to cook the rest of the way.

The end result. I love the pink color!! It is SO sweet. I will be using half of this for apple butter.
Now for the give a way!! Rebecca and Val over at Foodie with Family is having a give a way of a $50.00 gift certificate of your choice should you win. You can choose from:of Amazon.com, Williams-Sonoma, King Arthur’s Baker’s Catalogue or Cooking.com.
Here are three ways to enter:

Leave them a comment telling them the things for which you’re thankful. Make it short and sweet or make it long winded. They will take it all! That’s worth one entry.

Leave an announcement about our giveaway on your blog. That’s worth another entry.

Do something kind and unexpected for someone. It does not have to be a big deal, just hold a door for someone, make your kids’ favorite dessert, or return your library books on time. Whatever it is just try to make someone’s day a little better. You don’t have to tell them your good deed unless you want to, all you have to do is tell them you did one in the comments section. That’s worth two extra entries.
The drawing will be done by her son's on November 18. So jump on over there and enter.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Gratituesday:Veterans' Day

This meme is hosted by Heavenly Homemakers. It is a great way each week to remember all the Lord has given you to be thankful for. Stop by her blog to see other posts.
I'm thankful for all the men and women who served our country by enlisting in the armed forces. The put their lives on the line for the freedoms we have today. It is sad that many areas do not celebrate Veterans' Day like it should be. We found no activities in our area for today. So we have decided to pick a few Veterans' that we know and "shower them with blessings and Thanks". First on our list is my brother in law, he was in the Navy and served in the Persian Gulf, we will be making him cookies and cards. The second is my parent's neighbor, he was in the Army during Korea, we will be doing the same for him. I'm so thankful that these men and women are fighting for us. With out them we may not have the freedoms to attend Church, Homeschool ect. May God bless each and every one of them!
I'm also thankful for the ones who are over there right now serving our Country. Many blessings to them and the ones they leave behind. You all make a huge sacrifice during the time they are deployed. Although we do not know all the families personally, we do lift you up in prayer each day!

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today...

Outside my Window... it is snowing. Birds are chirping at the feeders.

I am thinking... I love being in Church. We had missionaries yesterday with us from Germany. It is always so interesting to me to talk with them. His message was so eye opening also, he said that we shouldn't get so caught up on "how many" people we bring to Christ. He used Andrew as an example, he was very quiet but what an impact he had. That one person you bring to Christ could be the one to bring hundreds.

I am thankful for... the freedom to homeschool in this country. In Germany it is against the law to homeschool.

From the Learning Room…we are starting our Thanksgiving unit, along with our normal studies of South America.

From the kitchen... more applesauce. We were given 3 bushel of apples. We have such a freezer full. It will be great in the winter to open a container and smell the wonderful apples. We also had many pumpkins given to us that we will be cooking up and freezing. We have been so blessed with wonderful farm friends who think of us often. I will be picking up many winter squash as well. So if anyone has some squash recipes please let me know. Also...does anyone know if you can freeze winter squash in chunks (after cooking it)?

I am wearing... sweats, sweatpants, socks and slippers. It is pretty chilly here this morning. But it feels good.

I am reading... Bible-Nahum, I will begin the book I won from the 160 Acre Woods blog Whispers in the Bayou. It looks like a really good book.

I am praying... for peace about my upcoming surgery on my back. I will be going into the hospital on December 11. I will only be in the hospital 1-2 days! Then I have to wear a brace for at least 3 months. My doctor is very confident that I will make a complete recovery and will be 100%. I'm also praying I listen to ALL the doctors orders and take it easy!

I am hearing... the kids talking behind me at the table while working on their Math assignments. I'm very happy because they picked up the books on their own! We technically do not start school for about an hour. They are also talking about playing store.

Around the house... many things to do in preparation of my surgery. I'm organizing things, we are going to work on some Christmas cookies to place in the freezer.

One of my favorite things... the smell of the cold morning air. Especially after snow, with the hint of wood burning in the air, then being able to step into a warm cozy home.
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week... finish the tasks for around the house. Get the children on a cleaning schedule to help the home run smooth while I am laid up.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you... apple cider!! A few weeks ago we went on a field trip to learn how it was made. Best of all we were able to sample the cider!

Show and Tell Friday

Every Friday is Show and Tell here in blog land. To see other show and tell items stop by Kelli's House blog and check them out. There are so many different and interesting items there.

Last weekend our Church had a craft day. It was so much fun. I took my 2 daughters with me and we had the time of our lives. There were a total of 6 crafts you could make and between the 3 of us we made them all. It was a great day and a great opportunity for our Church to outreach into the community. There was even a scrapbooking table set up for those to work on their books. I did not bring any of my stuff because I was doing so many of the crafts. We also had soup and sandwhiches, bagels, fruit ect. to eat. It was such a great day. I recomend this to other Churches as well. If you should have any questions on how to start please email me. I'd be happy to share the details.

This is a Christmas tree made from a Styrofoam cone, garland, with a star pick in the top. This is one that Hannah made and is so proud of. I was surprised she still wanted to go considering she was in the hospital the night before with pneumonia. She is a true craft person!!

This is a pumpkin made out of fabric. Each one of us made one of these. It was so much fun, you sew around the circle (like you would sew a yo-yo) then carefully (i stress carefully) stuff it and pull the thread to close. Lets just say there were exploding pumpkins all over the place....LOL! We finished ours the next day when we came home. My son even made one. He was pretty upset that he couldn't go to the craft day also. Maybe next year.

These are salt and pepper shakers. I'm so excited about these because I painted them myself!!! I've never painted anything except a wall and that didn't even turn out this well. Who knew I could paint. I came home loaded with paints asking my Husband what could I paint now....mirror...windows...LOL!

Jewelry making has become so big now. My daughter Katie was very excited to learn how to do this. She loved it. She ended up making 3 pairs of earrings. This is one set she made. She has now asked for more stuff for Christmas to make jewelry. I'm so happy she liked doing it. Does anyone know if you can make rings?

This is a snowman ornament. My daughter Hannah and I did this one together. She is so thrilled with it. But I won't let her touch it because it is actually a light bulb. You know what happens to those when they are dropped, especially on hard wood floors. I think these are so cute. We may make more to give as gifts.

This is my first attempt at making a wreath. I did enjoy it, although it is a bit crooked in this picture. I still have to add a bow on to the top and fill in the gaps with some more white flowers. There is a snowman for each family member. I really liked making it. I have an extra wreath I bought just in case I screwed this one up!

Have a great Show and Tell Friday!!

Pumpkin Crisp/cake as some of us call it...

I have had a few requests for this recipe so here it is. My kids like pumpkin pie but not the crust. So I found this recipe years ago and they gobble it right up. It is now my husband's favorite. ENJOY!

Pumpkin Crisp

Crust
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow/spice cake mix (reserve 1 cup for topping)
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, melted
Filling

1 (29 ounce) can pumpkin puree
2 eggs
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup white sugar
2/3 cup evaporated milk

Topping
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Set aside 1 cup cake mix for the topping. Combine remaining cake mix, 1 egg, and melted butter or margarine. Pat into a 9x13 inch baking pan.

In a large bowl, mix pumpkin, 2 eggs, spices, 1/2 cup sugar, and milk. Pour pumpkin mixture over the cake mix crust.

In a small bowl, combine 1 cup cake mix and 3/4 cup sugar. Cut in 1/2 cup softened butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle mixture on top of pumpkin mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 55 minutes.
